Here are a few things I found interesting while browsing around the past few days. I wanted to write a separate post for each of them, but I realized if I did that my head would probably explode or I would end up developing high blood pressure. So, to save my sanity and my health, I decided to write a little something with each piece and let it speak for itself. Enjoy.
- Ahh…Pakistani politics. It’s the stuff uncles dream of. Well, living here in America I know I get a really skewed picture of what is actually going on, but I know this much…Benazir Bhutto is just pure evil. She is trying really, really hard to get support (and she has it from the West), but Pakistanis have already suffered at her hands (twice!). She has so many corruption charges against her, it’ll probably take her the rest of her life to fight them. She talks about democracy, but what about all the crap she did when she was in power? She stole 1.5 BILLION dollars from the Pakistani people. The people who are starving and begging on the streets because they can’t feed their children. The people who are suffering from power outages, lack of clean water and the diseases caused by it. I just shudder to think what goes through that twisted mind of hers. I read an editorial by her niece, which was really well-written, here. The West (i.e. Bush & Co.) are backing up Benazir and she is trying to entice them by promising to disclose the location of the nukes and the head of the man who made them possible, A.Q. Khan. No wonder Pakistanis hate her. I just wonder though, the U.S. and others are sooooo willing to bring her into power even though her and her husband are guilty of so many crimes (corruption, murder, kidnappings, etc.), but would they do the same thing in their own countries? Would they want a money-hungry, power-hungry criminal to run their country?? Oh, wait…oops.
- I came across this piece on Sabbah’s blog about a school up in Connecticut banning a Palestinian folk dance troupe from performing because “it is offensive to Jews and Israel.” I mean…I know folk dancing isn’t everyone’s thing, but I’m sure they’re not that bad. Here’s an excerpt:
“The performance by Al-Ghad Folklore Dancing Troupe of Beit Sahour was meant to be cultural and not overtly political, said the Rev. David W. Good, senior minister of the First Congregational Church of Old Lyme, where the troupe performed this past weekend.
But resident Ginger Horton said she felt compelled to complain to school officials after her two grandchildren told her they were offended by the troupe’s performance at the high school Monday.
“[My] grandchildren came home very frightened,” Horton said Thursday.
Good, who saw the performance at the school, disagreed. (bold by Sabbah, not me)
“I saw nothing there that was anti-Jewish,” Good said. “It was a cultural program … Anything of this nature, given the realities of where they live, the political realities are a short distance away.”
Well, so much for freedom of expression. We all know it only applies to certain groups anyway. No way the rest of us have any right to express ourselves. I ask myself, when people express themselves, especially with something that might be controversial (although I don’t quite see how folk dancing is controversial), don’t they still get to express themselves or must they be automatically and systematically censored? And why is it that a certain group is always calling for/pressuring for censorship?

And here is the last one, the one that boggled my mind the most. It’s from Lawrence of Cyberia’s blog , a post titled Muslims: It’s the new Jew. I can’t really explain it in words, you have to read it to understand it, but I’ll just say this much: For the past few centuries (the author of the post goes all the way back to the 12th century) there has been a custom called “blood libel” in which Christians would blame Jews for capturing, sacrificing, and sometimes eating Christian children (making matzo balls out of them, if they were feeling particularly evil). But now, there is a Christian ministry spreading the news that it is historically a Muslim thing as well (I’d like to see those sources!) and that there are instances in Iraq where The Terrorists are baking and eating children (on beds of rice).
Anyway, here is the article, but just beware…they cite Robert Spencer as an expert source, so you know they’re being totally fair (NOT!). I just found the unoriginality (yeah, I know that’s not a word) of it all to be hilarious. “Hey, it worked well when we were demonizing the Jews, why not use it on the Muslims too?” Come on guys, we deserve better!
